Hmmm....I don't recall ever reading about mortaring a stone roof together like that; they usually just lay them down and nail them with copper nails. Maybe it was an attempt to stop them from leaking or fluttering in high winds. Those don't strike me as being a high grade of slate, but I'm no slate roofing authority either.
