Pouring the Vanity Top

I promised to post more about Guy's and my current big (and temporally extensive) project. I'm going to tag them all with 305forner - the house's address - so that you can get a bit of an overall picture. This post concerns the creation of the cement master suite vanity.

Front edge of the sink bowl. The sink will be round. Everything is upside down, as you can see.

Guy carved the sink mold from solid wood. The pipe that you see in the foreground is the overflow going down (up) to the main drain.

This must be my favorite part of the form: two curves - one of them compound - meet here. Guy, who did all the work on this mold, set up all the wood, then sanded, filled with wood filler, sanded again...

The wood is all coated in polyurethane and the seams siliconed. The water is not supposed to escape from the cement in an uneven fashion. That little half circle will eventually be the soap dish.

One of the side pieces that is going to stand below the vanity top. Guy curved the front of them to match the top. I was thinking of just making them flat, but this turned out nicely after a little - just a very little - bit of work.

Packing tape: another way of sealing in the moisture. It is tricky to apply.

The cement has brown colouring, which ended up purplish when it dried. It also has little white fibers all through it for strength.

I've got pictures of the finished article, all polished up and installed. I'll sort them out and post some time.
