Birkenhead

 We walked around in Birkenhead when we visited the U-boat museum. These are a few of the miscellaneous shots from our walk.

 Birkenhead is across the bay from Liverpool.

 Some parts of the dock area are on the industrial side. They still manage to look relatively pleasant.

 Life preservers seem to be posted near all bodies of water.

U-534

We visited the U-534 in Birkenhead. 

It has been cut into sections for display. The ends are glassed off, so we couldn't go right inside, but we could see much of the internals.

U-534 was sunk at the end of WW2, and was raised in 1986 by treasure hunters. Now it is a museum.

The anti aircraft gun atop the conning tower.

That big crumple in the stern was caused by the depth charge that sank the U-534.

It doesn't take very big holes to sink a submarine. Fortunately for the crew, all managed to get out of the hull, though three of them died later.

Wet Day

Our 'hire' car waits for us while we go for a walk in Birkenhead, across from Liverpool. Most days were not unpleasantly wet during our stay.

We spent a day in Liverpool

First impressions were a rather mixed matter...

Lots of litter, graffiti...

And broken buildings, generally.

But we made our way down to the waterfront, where things are better maintained.

Liverpool has a very large, interesting dock area.

A few nods to the industrial history of the place.

The architecture is a mixture of old and new.

We were there on the day of the homecoming parade for Liverpool's victorious football team. We observed the parade from a safe distance across the water.

It's a colorful place.
