Okay, I did my homework.

They're phragmites, or common reed.

I finally got to them at sunset, hence the further photographs.

They're used for thatching roofs and making paper, among other things.

Unfortunately, they are also an invasive pest, growing rapidly and driving out other species.

They can grow as tall as 19 feet, so our locals are midgets.
