This was our first stop at Hadrian's Wall. The ditch that the road runs through on the left was part of the defenses.
A small guard post
The stones that make up the wall faces are square, whereas the middle stones are a jumble of oddly shaped or round stones, so the outer stones were more likely to be taken for people's houses, leaving the middle higher than the edges.
Down the hill to the river valley. At the end of the wall are the remains of the old bridge head.
The river has moved toward the far bank, leaving the bridge head high and dry.
A collection of recovered stones from the old bridge pilings. In some stones you can see where sockets were carved for wooden support posts.
