Stone Wall Tour

We saw miles of stone fence like this, with two horizontal lines sticking out proud of the rest of the wall.

I was told that those are larger rocks that go all the way through and tie the wall together. The rest of the wall is two rows of rocks, with a space in between.

This wall was beautifully made. It looks like the builders sorted the rocks into thicknesses, making each layer a certain size. Some walls look very shaggy. Not this one.

This wall features half round capstones.

The capstones shed most of the rain, reducing the moisture that gets under the wall, thereby reducing the chances of frost heaves taking the wall apart.

There has unfortunately been some theft of the capstones. They all had to be cut to a matching shape, so they must have some value.

A different style of capstone.
