York Minster

 We visited the cathedral at York.

 It is one of the largest - impressive for a building of that age.

 A long ways up.

 The organ has a 32' stop. Yes, the pipes are up to 32 feet tall, and 2 feet in diameter.

 We didn't hear the organ play, because it is being refurbished. It is mostly hidden behind a nest of scaffolding.

 We were able to go down into the crypt under the floor.

 The foundations have been reworked, but they left the old pillar stubs for display.

 People's bodies are laid to rest in the floor of the cathedral.

 At one place in the cathedral basement they have excavated all the way down to the drain in the old Roman street. No one explained to me why the ghosts of Roman fish are supposed to have a liking for pennies.

We also climbed the old stone staircase to the top of the tower and got a view of the roofs in the city. But that needs to wait for another post or two.
