The Needles are the rock formations on the West end of the Isle of Wight.
It's a natural place for lighthouses and naval batteries.
The cliffs are white chalk with black dotted lines. The black dots appear to be obsidian.
Looking East along the South cliff
That dark crack is not man made. It is caused by subsidence. The whole cliff is thinking of moving into the ocean.
The point and the down behind it are riddled with wild rabbit holes. I don't imagine that they had an easy dig in the chalky soil.
The monument in the distance is on Tennyson Down. Tennyson spent quite a bit of time in the area.
